For those who change their social circle, climb the social ladder or advance thanks to education, their lives are forever caught between two stools. They may have left their roots behind, but they are not forgotten, and a natural sense of belonging in their new setting might never arise. Behaviour learned through lack of money, education or both is too deeply ingrained. What’s it like to be torn between two lives and constantly zigzag between different social circles and viewpoints?
Together we’re going to set off again on this never-ending journey. We will cover parental belief systems, the effort of trying to keep up, and feelings of grief, betrayal, shame and imposter syndrome – all things, in other words, typical of the split skillset of people who have moved up in the world. ‘check your habitus’ is a collection of texts in which 18 writers examine these behaviours and invite readers to do the same.
The worst part about shame is that ‘you think you’re the only one who feels this way,’ as Annie Ernaux once wrote. Over 21 days, three different literary voices will be heard each day that shed light on some aspect of this never-ending journey. Personal experiences are transposed onto a social structure in defiance of the logic of our class-based society and its opportunities for advancement. ‘Looking the part’ becomes ‘fuck the part’ and from a feeling of isolation, a chorus raises its voice against loneliness.
